Welcome to Louisiana Aircoolers

The Louisiana Aircoolers web site Lousisana Aircoolers has been rededicated to racing, building and restoration of air-cooled Volkswagen engine powered vehicles.

These vehicles include racecars, dune buggies, sand rails and other purpose built performance related applications for the Volkswagen engine and drive train components.

KäferCar Racing is an effort put forth by myself, Gary Scurlock to expand and grow my Volkswagen Hobby. I worked with VWs in high school and like all teenagers I poured myself into learning all about these cars. I enjoy all aspects of dealing with automobiles. I enjoy working on the engines, body work, painting and even the interior work. No other car has fascinated me more than Volkswagens.
While a Volkswagen Beetle isn't the most attractive car. It has features that appeal to me. It is a simple car, most pieces and parts are easily handled with minimal effort. (try putting a V-8 on a cafeteria table) Parts are readily available even at the local parts store. The car doesn't have computers or fuel injection to hurt your brain.
the best thing about Volkswagen is the other cool stuff you can build. Naturally dune buggies and trikes come to mind. Also Baja bugs for racing. In 1959 some gentlemen got together and came up with another car built from VW parts. The Formula Vee race car. Formula because cars have to fit a "formula" of length, width, hieght, and weight. Also called out in the formula is engine size and arrangement. The Volkswagen Formula Vee is very similar to Formula One except that the average person can actually buy and own a Formula Vee for the price of a tire or two from a Formula One car.

1974 Thing Transmisson and Engine Swap

Two years ago I jacked up my 1974 Thing and installed BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires to give it an offroad look. I wasn't pleased with the rough ride and the large diameter tires messed up my gear ratio. Top speed dropped from 65 mph to 55 mph because of the large diameter tires.

First I removed the poor tired 1600 dual port motor. I plan to rebuild it for use some where else. This motor came from a bug called "The Flying Squirrel". It is in very bad shape, I ran a leak down compression test and each cylinder could barely muster 35 lbs. Still the engine ran and didn't smoke so I feel it is a good candidate for rings and valve job.

I Purchased car #1 with the intention of preparing and driving it in Feb 2007 Drivers School in Texas. Because of an accident I am four months behind schedule.
I could either spend the money restoring car #1 and go to school September 2007. I could spend the money on a running drivable car to stay on schedule..
